Burnout Paradise
About this Game:
PC users had to wait a bit for Burnout Paradise to make its way to consoles, and perhaps to make up for it, Criterion is offering this demo that gives you full access to the fictional city, albeit for only half an hour.
The half-hour limit is problematic, given the massive download size, which is over 3GB! If you have a slow internet connection, the download may take longer than you can play. The second issue is the way the game is presented—which pauses your driving to explain something—which can be annoying if you just want to drive, see the city, and crash into things.
These criticisms don’t diminish the brilliance of this fantastic arcade racing game. If you’re looking for realistic control and simulation in a racing game, Burnout Paradise isn’t for you. The physics are convincing, while the car controls are lenient enough to allow for long drifts, jumps, and hilarious crashes. As Burnout fans will tell you, crashes are never better executed, and they’re perfectly integrated into the racing (after a big crash, you get a jump start!). This game is all about exhilarating, exaggerated, and psychologically dangerous racing.
There are plenty of challenges, from straight races to Road Rage, where the goal is to eliminate a number of other racers before destroying your car, and Marked Man, where you have to reach a destination before your pursuers destroy you. Alternatively, you can simply drive around Paradise City’s vast open world. Some may find the lack of a defined structure challenging—you’re not required to do anything, just participate in competitions at your own pace—but you’ll quickly become immersed in the game’s rhythm.
Visually, the cars look great, the damage modeling is just what you’d expect, and the city is stunning, day or night. The beauty of this fictional city is that it was built specifically for driving, and the corners, slopes, shortcuts, and so on scattered throughout mean it’s always a fun place to live.
