Maneater is an open-world role-playing game developed by Tripwire Interactive. This game lets you experience the ultimate power and play as the most powerful predator in the sea: a giant shark. You play as a furious female bull shark, hungry for human flesh and mutant materials. Think of it as a Jaws-like action RPG. However, Game3rbs its limitation lies in its focus on a single objective: predation. Most of what you’ll do is control the shark to reach its prey.
A Shark on the Brink of Revenge:
Maneater begins with you—the shark—being released in the fictional town of Port Clovis on the Gulf Coast. This change in environment shifts your diet from local juvenile fish to humans. But while you’re enjoying devouring unsuspecting swimmers, you fall into the hands of a ruthless Cajun shark hunter named Skelly Pete. Not content with taking you, he leaves a sadistic scar on the young shark inside you. All of this ignites a story of revenge.
Maneater unfolds like any other action RPG. You level up to become strong enough to face increasingly ferocious predators. You start by feeding on smaller prey, and as you absorb different nutrients, you can induce mutations that help you evolve. Although the term is “evolution,” leveling up actually grants you pieces of armor that you can swap. Some boost your health, while others increase your strength or defense. However, some armor grants you the attributes of other species—like a dolphin’s sonar—or allows you to survive on land longer.
Besides the constant human-eating, Maneater offers battles with top-flight predators. As you climb the food chain, you’ll face various boss fights. However, this singular focus on survival, human-eating, and evolution doesn’t compensate for a compelling story. Ultimately, the game feels like a typical open-world title: repetitive. The combat system is monotonous, lacking the variety or depth to keep you engaged. A Desperate Attempt
Despite its innovative concept, Maneater quickly loses its appeal. It’s a relatively short role-playing game with lackluster execution. There isn’t enough gameplay variety to justify the endless human-eating to reach the level of a giant shark. The story also adds nothing positive to the campaign, with its themes somewhat contradictory. Overall, despite its highly original concept, it doesn’t offer a truly satisfying experience.
