Spec Ops: The Line is a new original title from 2K Games that features provocative and gripping Third-Person modern military Shooter gameplay designed to challenge players’ morality by putting them in the middle of unspeakable situations where unimaginable choices affecting human life must be made.

Spec Ops: The Line Features include, a gripping, storyline reminiscent of Apocalypse Now and Heart of Darkness but set in a ruined Dubai, tactical squad-based Delta Force gameplay throughout a horizontally and vertically oriented world, devastating sandstorms which can be used in combat, a variety of multiplayer modes and maps, and deep support featuring two factions.

It’s been 6 months since Dubai was wiped off the map by a cataclysmic sandstorm. Thousands of lives were lost, including those of American soldiers sent to evacuate the city. Today, the city lies buried under sand, the world’s most opulent ruin. Now, a mysterious radio signal is picked-up from Dubai, and a Delta Recon Team is sent to infiltrate the city. Their mission is simple: Locate survivors and radio for Evac. What they find is a city in the grip of war. To save Dubai, they’ll have to find the man at the heart of its madness—Col. John Konrad.

Spec Ops: The Line is a third-person shooter that revives a series we haven’t seen in a decade. This demo brings you back to the Spec Ops universe in explosive style, as you’re attacked from a helicopter hovering over Dubai’s devastated skyline as a sandstorm rages.

A multiplayer mode will be included, but so far we’ve only played part of the single-player campaign. The story revolves around catastrophic sandstorms that forced the evacuation of Dubai’s residents, and a US Army Colonel stayed behind to protect those unable to escape. Your squad is sent to find out exactly what happened.

Will the story deliver on its promises:

Spec Ops: The Line maintains the third-person shooter model, with additional squad controls. It’s an exciting game, with good graphics and sound effects that lend a realistic feel to the sand-swept urban environment, though the scenario is a bit dull and relies on a bunch of harsh clichés. The Spec Ops: The Line demo is linear, and while you’re ostensibly the team leader, you feel like you’re following your teammates and have to move at their pace. This sense of pre-planning is common in shooters, but the rest of Spec Ops: The Line needs to be very distinctive to make the planned moments bearable.

Controversial

Spec Ops: The Line 2K Games promises a game that will force players to make difficult decisions in morally gray areas—and claims it’s inspired by the same narrative as Apocalypse Now. That’s a bold hope, but not very likely given the strength of the demo. Still, the ruined city of Dubai makes for an interesting setting for Spec Ops: The Line, and the core cover-and-shoot gameplay is solid.

If you’re looking for a story-driven shooter, Spec Ops: The Line offers more depth than most military games.
